No, fotopia.org is not where photographers go when they die. fotopia.org is a not-for-profit online venue built to explore the convergence of photography, dialog, and community. One part virtual gallery, one part salon, ultimately it’s an ongoing and evolving exhibit created by photographers from around the world (that’s you). We’re hoping you post images and viewpoints from every place on Earth. We’re intrigued by how life looks from different reference points. We’ve created a space for creativity and conversation...now it’s up to you.
Photography

Here's how it works. We'll set up a new thread every month. Threads will have relevance across cultures (i.e. work, play, celebration, power, greed, conflict, lust, beauty). Your task is to submit images and words relevant to the thread (see submission guidelines for more details). Old images? New images? We don’t care. Threads remain active forever, so you can always submit to any of the previous threads
Dialog & Community

We’ve devoted a lot of effort towards the community-building aspects of fotopia. There is the opportunity to start a discussion thread about any image on the site. You can view a profile for any contributor, see all the images they’ve submitted, and see the images they’ve marked as their favorites. Likewise, you can see a gallery of your own images, view all your comments, and keep track of your own favorites.
Exploration

There are a few different ways to browse images. You can follow any individual thread or you can cross threads using “freeswim”, which groups images by keywords, emotions, geography, or time. There’s also a “threaded view” which will feel comfortable to anyone who spends time in online discussion groups.
So that’s it. Please participate and enjoy. Sorry the site is English only. We’ll take care of that when we can.
We owe thanks to several great photomeme projects that inspired us to keep going as we created this site. Heather Champ's The Mirror Project is an amazing collection of self portraits and is not to be missed. The Human Clock is another must-see. And Found Magazine combines words and images in ways that are always surprising.
